The usage of PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) has spread into many fields, from their origin of helping the corporate executives as day planners. What started as an organizer of schedules, calendars and appointment reminders have become ideal assistants in education, journalism and entertainment sectors with more and more utility software being made available for PDA.

The word processor utility has many uses in mobile devices like PDA and Smart Phone – from reference resources to writing templates. Many PDA users find it comfortable with word processor the opportunity to search, spell-check, and word prediction (if provided) that brings many accessibility benefits.
For this the interface for entering the text is the more critical feature. The word processor built in the models of PDA offers portable keyboards that are more easy to use than built in custom keyboards. The next generation advancement of handwriting recognition is increasingly accurate now, to provide a good alternative to the built-in keyboard.

In the education field, class-based discussion on subjects and themes is made easier with PDA word processor software. Supposing a class of 7 students is conducted in a hut away from the main campus, the tutor can acquire PDAs for all the students. The college technicians can have these PDAs downloaded with the subject – say Shakespeare’s Plays – in the PDAs of the students. Now for a question by the tutor to analyze the various themes in those Plays, each student can make use of the search facility to explore the themes – love, revenge, or betrayal. The students can cut and paste the theme found, on a new document and can come up with a commentary with quotes.

Similarly in e-learning the usage of word processor in PDAs is immense. Note-taking is made easier by portable keyboard; spell checking facility comes with most of the word processor software; text to speech software are also available for PDA which make things easier, especially with large volumes of texts. Carrying round PDAs with word processor is more discreet and easier than carrying a wad of worksheets and text tiles.

Visual reading of texts with word processor in PDAs is of great help to many – because brightness, color and font size are adjustable to suit the needs. Clip on magnifiers can help a lot of those with low vision. Free e-book readers are available for both Palm and Windows mobile platforms like PDAs – such as Microsoft Reader; Mobipocket, Palm Reader and many others. These utilities in word processor software are very useful for PDA users.
